Published 01 Oct 2026

During August 2026, SHE Report’s Kerala coverage documented a wide range of incidents involving women and children, including sexual offences against minors, domestic and family-related violence, sexual harassment and assault, physical attacks, suspicious and violent deaths, technology-facilitated abuse, and crimes affecting elderly women. The reported incidents occurred across homes, public transport, workplaces, healthcare settings, educational and institutional environments, and online spaces. Police arrests, case registrations, investigations and court proceedings were reported throughout the month.

During the reporting period (01–31 August 2026), Kerala-related reports included POCSO and sexual-abuse cases involving minors, sexual assault and harassment of women, domestic and family-related violence, attacks in public places and institutions, suspicious deaths, cyber-enabled abuse involving private and morphed images, and offences affecting elderly women. Several reports also concerned court decisions and police action in previously registered cases.

A significant pattern during August was the continued reporting of sexual offences involving children and adolescents. Reports included the abduction of a 16-year-old girl in Kozhikode, the Pathanamthitta case in which police registered seven separate POCSO FIRs against seven men over alleged repeated abuse of a Class 10 student, a case involving a 17-year-old in Kozhikode, and the death of a 16-year-old student in Kumily that led to police action. Later in the month, a 14-year-old girl in Kasaragod was allegedly sexually assaulted by an autorickshaw driver, while a 21-year-old man in Kottayam was arrested after allegedly posing as an IPS officer on Instagram to befriend and sexually assault a minor. The Kerala High Court also upheld a 10-year sentence in a POCSO case involving a 17-year-old.

Domestic and family-related violence was another recurring concern. August reports included a woman in Ranni who alleged that her husband assaulted her, a young woman in Kannur who suffered burn injuries following an alleged attack by her husband, an alleged attempt by a husband in Thiruvananthapuram to set his wife and daughter on fire, and the death of a woman in Malappuram whose decomposed body was found near the Neerpuzha river, after which her husband was taken into custody. A 62-year-old woman in Thiruvananthapuram was also allegedly attacked by her nephew. A separate Kannur case concerned the death of a 20-year-old woman, with her family alleging that she had experienced physical abuse after marriage.

Sexual harassment and assault were reported in several public and institutional settings. A woman alleged sexual assault while travelling on a KSRTC bus in Malappuram, while another KSRTC-related case in Kozhikode resulted in the arrest of a man after a woman passenger complained of sexual assault. A man was arrested in Kochi after an alleged attempt to sexually assault a woman who was sleeping alone in her apartment. Police also arrested a man in connection with allegations that he targeted women living alone in the Alathur area. Other reports involved alleged sexual misconduct toward women on a train, the alleged sexual assault of a woman by a police Sub-Inspector in Kollam, and an assault involving a nurse and security guard at Kundara Taluk Hospital.

Technology-facilitated abuse was an important part of the month’s coverage. In Kasaragod, a man was booked for allegedly morphing photographs of young women into nude images and sharing them through Telegram groups. In Kollam, a woman alleged that her husband secretly photographed her and their four-year-old daughter and attempted to sell the images online. In Thiruvananthapuram, police arrested a person following allegations concerning derogatory and sexually suggestive AI-generated content targeting women. Another Kannur case involved a complaint that a woman had been secretly filmed while bathing, with police sending the seized phone for forensic examination.

The month also included serious violence and deaths involving women. A woman active in public affairs in North Paravur was allegedly lured to a house and murdered. A 14-year-old girl in Ernakulam was found dead at home, with police investigating the circumstances. A woman in Thiruvananthapuram, identified in the report as Soumya, died after suffering severe burn injuries in a house-fire incident in Nedumangad. In Thrissur, police arrested five men who were allegedly plotting to murder a female spa employee at her hostel.

Elderly women appeared in several August reports. In Thrissur, two women were arrested for allegedly deceiving an elderly woman and taking gold and cash from her. In Ottapalam, a young man was arrested after an elderly woman alleged that he entered her home, assaulted her and attempted to sexually assault her. In Kollam, a 59-year-old man was arrested after a 75-year-old woman allegedly faced an attempted sexual assault. These cases show that the month’s coverage included both violence and exploitation affecting older women.

Police and judicial action featured prominently throughout August. Police registered cases and made arrests in several alleged sexual offences, domestic-violence incidents, assaults and cybercrime cases. The Kerala High Court considered multiple sexual-assault and POCSO matters, including a ruling upholding a conviction and 10-year sentence in a case involving a minor. The High Court also considered proceedings connected with the 2017 actress assault case and a dowry-cruelty case. The Supreme Court issued a ruling in a domestic-violence matter arising from a Kerala case, while a Kozhikode POCSO case resulted in an acquittal after the court found that the evidence did not establish sexual assault.
