Use the Right to Information Act to hold institutions accountable

What is RTI?

The Right to Information Act, 2005 gives every citizen of India the right to request information from any public authority. You can use RTI to track:

  • Number of FIRs registered in a district for crimes against women
  • Status of specific cases (e.g. whether charge sheet was filed)
  • Conviction rates and pendency in courts
  • Number of Women Protection Officers appointed
  • Utilisation of funds for victim compensation

How to File an RTI

Address your application to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the relevant department (e.g., Kerala Police, Judiciary).

Pay ₹10 by IPO/DD/cash. BPL families are exempt from fee.

The PIO must respond within 30 days (48 hours for life/liberty matters).

If refused or delayed, file a First Appeal within 30 days to the Appellate Authority, then to the State Information Commission.
