2011 Child Abuse Case: Muvattupuzha POCSO Court Acquits All Accused

Muvattupuzha ,Ernakulam: The POCSO Court in Muvattupuzha on Wednesday acquitted all the accused in the 2011 case involving the alleged torture and sexual abuse of a seven-year-old girl who had been brought to Kerala from Tamil Nadu as a domestic worker.

Delivering the verdict, the Sessions Judge held that the prosecution had failed to produce sufficient evidence to establish the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

The case had shocked the state after it came to light in February 2011 when the child was admitted to a hospital in Kolenchery with severe injuries, burn marks and indications of prolonged physical and sexual abuse. The victim was reportedly employed as a domestic worker in a household where she was allegedly subjected to repeated violence and exploitation.

Following a detailed investigation, several persons were arraigned as accused in the case. However, after examining the evidence and witness testimonies, the court concluded that the prosecution had not succeeded in proving the allegations and acquitted all those charged.

The case had drawn widespread public attention and sparked debates on child rights, domestic labour and the protection of vulnerable children.
