Dozens of Women Arrested in Afghanistan for Alleged Dress Code Violations 

Herat City, Afghanistan: The United Nations expressed grave concern following the arrest of at least 30 women in Herat, Afghanistan, for allegedly violating dress requirements imposed by the Taliban authorities. The restrictions reportedly require women to wear a burqa or chador with a face covering and prohibit the use of perfume. Although many of the detained women were later released, the arrests have heightened fear among women and girls already facing severe restrictions on education, employment, movement, and public participation. 

The situation escalated when protests broke out against the arrests and restrictive measures. According to UN human rights experts, Taliban security forces allegedly used excessive force against demonstrators, including firing on crowds and beating protesters. Reports indicate that at least two people, including a child, were killed and more than 20 others injured during the crackdown. 

Legal Significance 

The incident raises serious concerns regarding violations of internationally recognized human rights, including the rights to equality, personal liberty, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and freedom of movement. Arbitrary arrests based on dress requirements and the reported use of force against protesters may be inconsistent with Afghanistan’s obligations under international human rights treaties. 

The case also highlights the ongoing erosion of women’s rights in Afghanistan and the growing international concern over gender-based discrimination.
