Punalur,Kollam: A serious case has emerged from an elderly care and rehabilitation centre known as Punarjani Abhaya Kendram in Thenmala, Punalur, Kollam. According to reports, female inmates escaped from the institution and alleged that they had been subjected to sexual abuse, intimidation, harassment, and other forms of mistreatment by the centre’s owner. Following their complaint, the Thenmala Police registered a case and arrested the person managing the institution. Police have commenced a detailed investigation into the allegations and the functioning of the care home. Authorities are also examining whether vulnerable residents, including elderly persons and individuals with mental disabilities, were being illegally confined or otherwise exploited.
The incident has raised concerns regarding the monitoring and regulation of private care homes and rehabilitation centres that house elderly and vulnerable persons. Questions have also been raised about institutional oversight, resident safety, and the adequacy of inspection mechanisms intended to protect those living in such facilities.
