Student Leader Complains of Obscene Messages and Videos; Inquiry Initiated

Kasaragod: A student leader from Kasaragod lodged a complaint alleging that another student leader had repeatedly sent her obscene messages and videos through a mobile messaging platform despite her objections. According to reports, she had earlier asked that such content not be sent to her, but the alleged conduct reportedly continued. The complaint was subsequently escalated to higher organizational authorities, following which an internal inquiry was initiated. The complainant has also alleged that she faced pressure and threats after pursuing the matter. The incident has generated discussion regarding online harassment, misuse of digital communication, and accountability within student organizations.

Legal Significance

The allegations primarily concern electronic transmission of obscene content and online harassment. If it is established that obscene messages, videos, or sexually explicit material were knowingly transmitted without the recipient’s consent, Sections 67, 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 may be attracted. Repeatedly sending such content after being asked to stop may also constitute a form of harassment and could invite criminal liability depending on the nature and frequency of the communication.

Further, if the complainant was threatened or intimidated after raising the issue, authorities may examine offences relating to criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). The case highlights the legal obligation to ensure safe digital spaces and emphasizes that unwanted sexually explicit communication through electronic means can attract both criminal and disciplinary consequences.
