Former High School Teacher Handed Whole-Life Sentence for the Murder and Sexual Abuse of Adopted Toddler

Lancashire, United Kingdom: Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old former secondary school teacher, was sentenced to a whole-life order at Preston Crown Court for the murder and horrific sexual abuse of his minor adopted son, Preston Davey. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in allowing the child’s death, child cruelty, and sexual assault.  

The court heard that Preston had been placed with the couple by an adoption agency in April 2023. Within less than four months under their care, the toddler was subjected to unremitting physical, psychological, and sexual violence, suffering 40 separate traumatic injuries. On July 27, 2023, the child was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest, where he was pronounced dead. Although Varley initially fabricated a story that Preston had accidentally drowned in a bath, pathological evidence conclusively proved that the child died from acute upper airway obstruction caused by smothering or the insertion of objects into his mouth during a sexual assault. Digital forensics also uncovered deeply disturbing images and videos on Varley’s phone documenting the abuse. The tragedy has sparked nationwide outrage, with the Children’s Commissioner for England labelling it a “massive safeguarding failure” and prompting an independent child safeguarding practice review into how multiple welfare agencies failed to detect the severe abuse.

This case carries immense weight within modern criminal law. By imposing a whole-life sentence, the court proved that a sadistic, fatal campaign of abuse against an infant justifies permanent imprisonment without the chance of parole. The ruling establishes a powerful precedent that the deliberate violation of a helpless child under one’s care is an unforgivable breach of legal duty. 

The judgment also reinforces strict legal accountability within a household. By handing down a heavy 25-year sentence to the partner who failed to intervene, the court made it clear that ignoring ongoing domestic abuse carries severe criminal guilt. Finally, the case highlights the legal accountability of public welfare agencies, showing that social workers and medical professionals must face institutional scrutiny when they fail to protect a child in danger.
