Kannur University Guest Lecturer Dies by Suicide; Boyfriend Arrested Amid Abuse Allegations 

Kannur: A guest lecturer associated with a college under Kannur University died after allegedly attempting suicide following an incident of physical assault by her boyfriend. According to the police investigation, the woman was reportedly attacked in a public place, and the incident caused significant emotional distress. She was admitted to a hospital in critical condition after the suicide attempt but later succumbed to her injuries.  

Following her death, the police arrested the boyfriend and registered a case based on allegations that his conduct and assault contributed to the circumstances leading to the suicide. Investigators are examining witness statements, electronic evidence, and other relevant materials to determine the extent of the accused’s involvement. The case has drawn public attention to the issue of abuse within intimate relationships and its potential psychological consequences.  

Legal Significance 

If the investigation establishes that the accused’s acts of assault, harassment, intimidation, or continuous abuse drove the victim to take the extreme step of ending her life, the offence may attract Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deals with abetment of suicide. In addition, the alleged physical attack may constitute offences relating to voluntarily causing hurt (Section 115 BNS) or other relevant provisions depending on the nature and severity of the injuries caused.
