Alleged Casting Couch Offer to Actress Maanvi Gagroo Raises Concerns Over Exploitation in Entertainment Industry

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Maanvi Gagroo recently revealed an unsettling experience from the early phase of her acting career. Speaking on a podcast, she stated that she had received a message offering her more than ₹1 lakh if she was willing to “compromise.” At that stage of her career, she reportedly did not understand the implication of the term and initially believed it referred to a financial arrangement. After consulting a mentor in the industry, she was advised to delete the message and block the sender.  

The actress further remarked that newcomers without industry connections often face difficulties in navigating the entertainment sector and may encounter inappropriate propositions disguised as professional opportunities. Her disclosure has reignited discussions on the persistence of the “casting couch” culture and the need for safer and more transparent working conditions in the entertainment industry. 

Legal significance 

The allegations disclosed by actress Maanvi Gagroo draw attention to the issue of sexual harassment and exploitation in professional environments, particularly where career opportunities are allegedly linked to demands for sexual favours. Under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, a demand or request for sexual favours may constitute sexual harassment. Such conduct may also amount to an offence under Section 79 of the BNS, 2023 if it involves words or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman. 

The incident also highlights the relevance of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act), which expressly recognises demands for sexual favours as a form of workplace sexual harassment. Even when such conduct occurs during recruitment or casting processes, victims may seek legal remedies through appropriate complaint mechanisms. The disclosure reinforces the need for safer professional environments, transparent hiring practices, and greater awareness among newcomers regarding their legal rights and protections.
