Air Force Officer’s Wife Alleges Forced Conversion, Sexual Assault and Blackmail; Three Accused Arrested 

Maharashtra: A 24-year-old woman, who is the wife of an Indian Air Force officer, has alleged that she was drugged, sexually assaulted, blackmailed, and forcibly subjected to religious conversion by a former classmate and his associates in Nagpur. According to her complaint, the accused allegedly recorded objectionable photos and videos after intoxicating her and subsequently used them to threaten and exploit her. The woman further alleged that she was repeatedly subjected to sexual abuse and extortion over an extended period.  

The complainant also alleged that she was taken to another location where religious rituals were performed against her will and that she was coerced into a conversion ceremony and a purported marriage. A video that surfaced on social media reportedly became an important piece of evidence in the investigation. Police have arrested multiple accused, including a cleric who allegedly participated in the conversion process, and further investigation is underway.  

Legal Significance 

If the allegations are established through evidence, the conduct may attract several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), including offences relating to rape, criminal intimidation, extortion, cheating, and offences involving the creation or misuse of intimate images for blackmail. The alleged administration of an intoxicating substance to facilitate the commission of an offence may also constitute a separate criminal offence.  

In addition, allegations of forced religious conversion may invoke the provisions of the relevant state anti-conversion law applicable in Maharashtra, if the investigation establishes coercion, fraud, inducement, or undue influence. The case further raises issues concerning a woman’s constitutional rights under Articles 21 and 25 of the Constitution of India, which protect personal liberty, dignity, and freedom of conscience and religion. The matter highlights the importance of informed consent, protection from sexual exploitation, and the legal consequences of coercive conversion and blackmail.
