Former New York Boarding School Faces Fresh Abuse Allegations 

New York: A former student of the now-closed Family Foundation School in Hancock, New York, has filed a civil lawsuit alleging that he and other students were subjected to severe physical, psychological, and sexual abuse while attending the institution. The lawsuit describes a pattern of mistreatment, including strip searches, forced labour, prolonged isolation, degrading punishments, and sexual abuse by a staff member. The school, which operated as a boarding institution for troubled teenagers, reportedly closed in 2014 amid growing allegations of misconduct.  

According to the court filings, students were allegedly compelled to perform labour benefiting the school’s owners and were subjected to harsh disciplinary practices. The complainant also alleges that when he reported sexual abuse by a teacher, his complaint was ignored and he was instead punished. The lawsuit further claims that local authorities failed to adequately respond to reports of abuse. The case has renewed attention on historical abuse allegations in residential educational institutions and the responsibility of school authorities to protect children under their care.

The allegations raise serious concerns regarding violations of fundamental child protection laws and human rights standards. Acts such as sexual abuse, physical violence, psychological abuse, forced labour, unlawful confinement, and institutional neglect may attract criminal liability against individual perpetrators as well as civil liability against the institution and its management.
