Delhi Influencer Alleges Rape and Blackmail After Being Called for Reel Shoot

Delhi Influencer Alleges Rape and Blackmail After Being Called for Reel Shoot

A Delhi-based social media influencer has alleged that a man sexually assaulted her after inviting her to a hotel in Burari on the pretext of shooting social media reels. According to her complaint, she came into contact with the accused through a social media platform in 2022. She alleged that during a meeting arranged for content creation, the accused raped her and subsequently blackmailed her, leading to repeated instances of sexual exploitation.

The complainant further stated that she later discovered that the accused had allegedly concealed his true identity. After distancing herself from him, she alleged that certain relatives of the accused threatened her. Based on her complaint, Delhi Police registered an FIR at Burari Police Station and commenced an investigation into the allegations.

Legal Significance

The allegations, if substantiated during investigation and trial, may attract Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) relating to rape. Where consent is obtained through deception, coercion, or where the victim is subjected to repeated sexual assault and intimidation, the offence may be treated as a serious violation of bodily autonomy and dignity. The prescribed punishment for rape under Section 64 is rigorous imprisonment of not less than ten years, which may extend to imprisonment for life, along with a fine.

The allegations of blackmail and threats may additionally attract Section 351 BNS (criminal intimidation). If any intimate images, videos, or electronic material were used for coercion or extortion, provisions relating to extortion and offences involving electronic communication under the Information Technology Act, 2000, may also become relevant depending on the evidence collected during the investigation. The case highlights the growing legal concerns surrounding misuse of social media connections and digital platforms to facilitate sexual exploitation.

Action to be Taken

The survivor should immediately report the incident to the nearest police station or through available women’s safety helplines and ensure that a detailed complaint is lodged. She should preserve all available evidence, including messages, call records, social media chats, photographs, videos, hotel records, screenshots, emails, and any other material that may support her allegations. If threats or blackmail continue, she should promptly inform the investigating officer and seek protection from the police and the court.

The survivor should cooperate with the investigation by providing a statement and any relevant evidence in her possession. She may also seek legal assistance and counselling support through legal services authorities, women’s commissions, or victim-support centres. If any intimate images or videos are being circulated or used for blackmail, she should immediately report the same to the police and the cybercrime authorities so that appropriate legal action can be taken and the content can be removed or blocked at the earliest opportunity.
