Delhi Woman Dies by Suicide Allegedly Due to Abuse by In-Laws 

Delhi: A 24-year-old woman named Tina was found dead by suicide at her matrimonial home in Delhi’s Nangloi area. Before her death, she reportedly recorded a video on her mobile phone in which she alleged that she had been subjected to mental and physical abuse by her in-laws and described the distress she had been facing. According to reports, the woman stated that the circumstances in her marital home had become unbearable and attributed her decision to the alleged harassment.  

Police recovered the video during the investigation and have initiated legal proceedings based on statements recorded before the competent authorities. The deceased had been married for about two and a half years and is survived by her young daughter. The case has attracted public attention because the allegations were recorded shortly before her death, making the video a potentially significant piece of evidence in the investigation.  

Legal Significance 

If the investigation establishes that the deceased was subjected to continuous cruelty, harassment, or abuse that drove her to take her own life, the accused persons may be liable under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Abetment of Suicide). The video recording, witness statements, electronic evidence, and surrounding circumstances may be examined to determine whether the conduct of the accused amounted to instigation, intentional aid, or active participation leading to the suicide.  

Additionally, where a married woman is subjected to physical or mental cruelty by her husband or relatives, Section 85 BNS (Cruelty by Husband or Relatives of Husband) may be attracted. If the investigation reveals dowry related demands or harassment connected to property or valuable security, provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, as well as relevant provisions concerning dowry-related cruelty, may also become applicable. The case highlights the legal consequences of sustained domestic abuse and the importance of early intervention in situations involving marital violence and coercive control. 

Action to be Taken 

The survivor’s family should provide the investigating authorities with all available evidence, including the video recording, mobile phone data, messages, call records, medical records, and details of any previous complaints regarding abuse. Statements of relatives, neighbours, and other persons aware of the alleged harassment should be recorded promptly to preserve crucial evidence. The family may also seek assistance from legal aid authorities to ensure proper representation throughout the proceedings. 

The police should conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations contained in the video, collect digital and forensic evidence, examine the role of each person named in the allegations, and determine whether offences such as abetment of suicide, cruelty by husband or relatives, or dowry-related offences have been committed. If sufficient evidence is found, the accused should be prosecuted before the competent court to ensure accountability and justice in accordance with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other applicable laws.
