Kerala High Court Allows Medical Termination for 14-Year-Old Rape Survivor

The Kerala High Court granted permission for the medical termination of the pregnancy of a 14-year-old girl who became pregnant after an alleged rape. The decision was made after carefully considering the recommendations of a specialized medical board and prioritizing the physical and mental well-being of the minor. 

The case came before the High Court because the pregnancy had advanced beyond the usual legal limit for termination, making judicial approval necessary. The court directed a government medical board to examine the child and submit a detailed report regarding her health, the risks involved in continuing the pregnancy, and the feasibility of a medical termination. 

Action to be taken 

Authorities should ensure that the investigation is conducted promptly, professionally, and without unnecessary delays so that all relevant evidence is collected and the accused is brought to justice. Since the victim is a minor and has experienced severe trauma, immediate access to psychological counselling, medical care, and continuous emotional support should be provided to aid her recovery.
