Kochi: A group of women students in Kochi reported that a man allegedly exposed himself to them while they were walking from their hostel to a nearby tea shop at night. Instead of ignoring the incident, the students, with the help of their friends, traced the accused to a nearby men’s hostel and detained him until the police arrived. The police arrested the accused and registered a case. The incident highlighted both the challenges women face in public spaces and the courage shown by the students in assisting law enforcement.
Action to be Taken
Authorities should conduct a proper, impartial, and thorough investigation to ensure that the accused is prosecuted in accordance with the law. Police should increase patrolling around student hostels, educational institutions, and other public places, especially during evening and night hours, to enhance women’s safety. Local authorities should improve street lighting and install CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas to deter such offences and assist investigations. Awareness campaigns should be organized to encourage women to report incidents of harassment without fear, while accessible complaint mechanisms should be strengthened. Additionally, survivors and witnesses should be provided with appropriate legal protection, counselling, and other necessary support to ensure their safety and well-being throughout the legal process.
