Woman killed in Malta — Żabbar

Woman killed in Malta — Żabbar

Żabbar: Charlotte Zammit, 44, was found dead inside a residence in Żabbar after police received a report of gunfire on Saturday afternoon. Her partner, Roderick Azzopardi, was arrested on suspicion of killing her. Police said the firearm believed to have been used was recovered from the scene. The case has raised serious concerns about the history of domestic violence between the victim and the suspect. According to police information reported by Times of Malta, Zammit had previously made two reports against the man, including a domestic-violence complaint. In 2017, he had been sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to offences including injuring, detaining and threatening to kill her. A magisterial inquiry and a police investigation are ongoing.

Action to be taken:

Authorities should thoroughly investigate the killing and examine whether earlier reports of domestic violence were adequately addressed. Systems for assessing and monitoring the risk faced by victims of repeated domestic abuse should be strengthened, with timely protection and support provided to women facing threats or violence.
