Migrant women report sexual harassment in Ceuta, Spain

Spain: Women who entered Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta during a large migration crossing reported facing sexual harassment while living in overcrowded and unsafe temporary conditions. Reuters reported that at least 15 sexual-assault cases had been reported, with several involving minors. Local authorities said some cases had already reached the courts, while police and social services were providing assistance to women who reported assaults. 

Action to be taken: 
Spanish authorities should ensure safe accommodation for migrant women and girls, increase protection and security around temporary camps, and investigate every reported assault promptly. Survivors should receive confidential medical, legal and psychological support. Authorities should also ensure that minors are provided with additional safeguarding and that allegations are investigated without discrimination based on immigration status.
