Palakkad: Congress councillor Prashobh, accused in a case involving the alleged sexual assault of a Dalit woman under the pretext of offering employment, has been remanded to police custody. The Mannarkkad SC/ST Court on Tuesday granted police custody of the accused for two days.
Police will conduct evidence collection at Prashobh’s residence and the car in which the alleged assault reportedly took place later today. The accused had allegedly remained absconding for nearly two months and surrendered before police after the High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. The case pertains to allegations that Prashobh sexually assaulted a Dalit woman after approaching her with a job offer. The complainant alleged that he visited her residence and assaulted her, later threatening and intimidating her by citing close ties with senior Congress leaders.
Police registered a case against Prashobh under serious charges, including rape and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. According to the woman’s complaint, Prashobh allegedly invoked his claimed proximity to senior political leaders, including Shafi Parambil and Rahul Mamkootathil, to intimidate her.
Following the allegations and the political controversy surrounding the case, the District Congress Committee (DCC) leadership expelled Prashobh from the party.
