Assam tribal girl gang-rape case

Assam: A case involving the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old tribal girl in Assam’s Chirang district saw further developments on 18 August. Three accused had been arrested in connection with the alleged assault, which reportedly took place on July 24, and the survivor’s mother approached police after an alleged video surfaced on social media on August 15. During a police visit to the alleged crime scene, the main accused reportedly attacked police personnel and attempted to flee; police subsequently shot and injured him. Protests were also held in Chirang demanding strict action against those accused.  

Action to be taken: 
The investigation should be conducted promptly and impartially, with the survivor’s privacy and safety protected throughout the legal process. Authorities should ensure that any alleged recording of the incident is not further circulated and should investigate how it was distributed. The accused should receive due process, while the court should determine responsibility based on evidence. Stronger protection and support systems should also be provided for minors who report sexual violence.
