Bombay High Court Convicts Former Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal in 2013 Sexual Assault Case

Bombay: The Bombay High Court (Goa Bench) overturned the 2021 trial court acquittal of former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 sexual assault case involving a junior colleague. The Division Bench found him guilty of rape and outraging the modesty of a woman under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Court sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine, observing that the trial court had wrongly granted the benefit of doubt despite the evidence on record.  

Action to be Taken: 

Authorities should ensure the prompt execution of the court’s sentence and provide continued legal and psychological support to the survivor. Institutions and workplaces must strengthen mechanisms for preventing and reporting sexual harassment, ensure compliance with workplace safety laws, and conduct regular awareness and sensitization programmes. The judiciary and law enforcement agencies should continue to prioritize timely investigation and trial of sexual assault cases to reinforce accountability and public confidence in the justice system.
