Canada: Peel Regional Police announced charges against two men tied to the MS-13 gang following a lengthy human trafficking investigation (“Project Mermaid”). Officers revealed that one of the suspects orchestrated the trafficking, intimidation, and sexual exploitation of a female victim across the Greater Toronto Area using an unauthorized cell phone while inside a penitentiary.
Action to be Taken:
Execute search warrants to secure digital evidence, prosecute the accused under human trafficking, illegal firearm, and organized crime statutes, conduct a thorough internal review and security audit within Correctional Service Canada (CSC) to block contraband cell phones in federal penitentiaries, locate and assist any additional unidentified victims, and provide trauma-informed support, shelter, and protective services to survivors.
