Delhi Police Brutality Probe: FIR Demanded Against Senior Cop Following High Court Outrage Over Assault on Female Protester

Delhi Police Brutality Probe: FIR Demanded Against Senior Cop Following High Court Outrage Over Assault on Female Protester

Delhi: On July 23, 2026, a formal police complaint was filed in New Delhi against Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sandeep Lamba for allegedly assaulting a female protester during police action near Jantar Mantar. The incident occurred during student-led demonstrations, where security forces deployed batons and tear gas to disperse crowds. Eyewitnesses, media reports, and verified video footage documented instances of police personnel physically using force against female demonstrators. The complaint was lodged following statements before the Delhi High Court regarding the lack of formal FIRs registered against officials involved in the crackdown.

Action to be Taken

When facing physical assault or police high-handedness during public demonstrations, immediate action begins by filing a formal complaint under Section 173(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) with the District Police Chief or Station House Officer seeking an FIR under relevant provisions—such as Section 74 (assault to outrage modesty) and Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt). If police refuse to register the FIR, survivors can approach a Judicial First Class Magistrate under Section 210 BNSS or move the High Court through public interest litigation (PIL) to mandate a court-monitored investigation.
