Kasaragod, Kerala: Law enforcement authorities have registered five separate cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against five individuals, including an autorickshaw driver, following the alleged sexual assault of a differently-abled minor girl in Pallikkara panchayat. The matter came to light after the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) facilitated a medical examination for the survivor at the district hospital, which subsequently confirmed the assault. According to the victim’s statement, she was initially assaulted by the autorickshaw driver, and later by four others, including a friend of the driver. Following a detailed report submitted by the CWC, the Bekal police officially registered the cases. A comprehensive investigation has been launched, and authorities are currently conducting operations to locate and apprehend the suspects. The allegations remain subject to ongoing legal proceedings.
Action to Be Taken
Any instances or suspicions of exploitation, abuse, or harassment targeting children—particularly vulnerable or differently-abled minors—must be reported immediately to the Child Welfare Committee, local law enforcement, or dedicated helplines such as Childline. Communities and institutional bodies must maintain heightened vigilance to ensure robust protective measures for minors. Authorities must prioritize confidentiality, handle survivors with extreme care and sensitivity, execute a meticulous investigation, and ensure all legal processes are stringently followed in accordance with child safety laws.
