Sonipat, Haryana:The Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted four men who had previously been sentenced to death in connection with the 2021 rape and murder of two minor sisters in Sonipat. The court found that although the evidence established that the girls had been sexually assaulted, the prosecution failed to reliably connect the four accused to the offences. The court noted contradictions in witness accounts and the absence of DNA evidence linking the accused to the victims.
Action to Be Taken
Investigations into sexual violence against children should ensure reliable witness protection, proper forensic examination and preservation of evidence so that perpetrators can be identified and prosecuted fairly.
