High-Profile Sexual Assault Conviction: Tarun Tejpal Case

Bombay: The Bombay High Court (Goa Bench) overturned a trial court’s previous The Bombay High Court (Goa Bench) overturned a trial court’s previous acquittal and convicted former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 sexual assault case involving a junior colleague. The Division Bench set aside the 2021 sessions court verdict and sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rape and outraging a woman’s modesty. 

Action to be taken 

Regarding the Tarun Tejpal conviction, law enforcement authorities must immediately enforce the arrest and custody order following the four-week surrender window, while ensuring the ₹10.21 lakh penalty is collected for victim compensation. Concurrently, the State’s legal team must prepare to file counter-affidavits opposing any interim bail or stay of sentence if Tejpal’s defense files a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court.
