Kannur: Death of 20-year-old woman — investigation into husband 

Kannur: Twenty-year-old Fathimathul Riza from Poithumkadavu in Kannur died on 28 July, around six months after her marriage. According to her family, she had allegedly faced physical and mental harassment from her husband, Asif. Her family alleged that the harassment began after she became aware of his substance use and continued for several months.  

After her death, police reportedly recovered a suicide note and WhatsApp messages sent by Riza to a friend. According to the prosecution’s case, these materials contained allegations concerning the treatment she had received from her husband. Her family also alleged that she had previously experienced serious distress but that the matter was not properly communicated to them. These allegations remain part of the investigation and have not been established as proven facts in court. 

Action to Be Taken 

Authorities should conduct a fair and thorough investigation into the allegations of domestic abuse and alleged abetment, examining the suicide note, digital communications, witness statements and other available evidence. Since the accused is reportedly abroad, the police should follow the appropriate legal procedures to ensure his availability for the investigation and court proceedings. Stronger awareness and early reporting of domestic violence should also be encouraged so that women facing abuse can receive timely protection, counselling and legal assistance.
