Local Council Faced Investigation Following Allegedly Arbitrary Actions in Assault Case

Ranchi, Jharkhand: Police authorities have initiated action against several members of a local village council (Panchayat) following allegations of bypassing the legal system in a serious assault case involving a minor. According to law enforcement sources, a local informal council session was convened to address an assault complaint against an individual. Instead of notifying judicial or police networks, the council members reportedly imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the accused. The complaint further alleges that the council then used a portion of the collected money to host an community gathering featuring alcohol, while the victim’s family received no assistance. The matter surfaced after details reached senior police leadership, prompting immediate intervention by district officers. A formal case has been registered against both the primary assault suspect and the council members involved in attempting to suppress the criminal act. The investigation is actively ongoing.

Action to Be Taken

Informal village bodies, panchayats, or community councils possess zero legal jurisdiction to adjudicate, settle, or penalize criminal offenses, especially severe crimes targeting minors. Any attempts to resolve criminal actions through local financial settlements or extrajudicial arbitration are unlawful and must be reported immediately to formal law enforcement agencies. Authorities must carry out stringent legal proceedings against anyone participating in the concealment or unauthorized handling of such crimes, ensuring that cases are processed exclusively through institutional court systems.
