West Bengal: In a major development regarding the 2024 rape and murder of the resident doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the West Bengal Police arrested former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh from a hotel in Puri, Odisha. Following a fresh FIR lodged on August 9 by the victim’s father, the former MLA was charged with destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy, and forcing a hurried cremation of the victim’s body without the family’s consent or proper documentation to prevent a second autopsy.
To advance the legal and judicial proceedings in this case, the actions to be taken by law enforcement and judicial authorities include bringing the arrested former MLA Nirmal Ghosh back to Kolkata by road to formally produce him before the Sealdah/jurisdictional court on Friday, August 14; filing an application for police custody to interrogate him regarding the alleged conspiracy and alteration of crematorium registers; executing arrests or summons for named co-accused TMC functionaries Somnath Dey and Sanjib Mukherjee; and submitting a supplementary charge sheet detailing evidence of destruction of evidence to the court.
