Sexual Crimes in Scotland Reach Record High Levels 

Scotland: Official statistics released in Scotland show that recorded sexual crimes increased by 10% during 2025–26, reaching 16,430 cases, the highest level since records began in 1971. The category includes offences such as rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and indecent communications. The figures also revealed a 23% increase in offences recorded under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act during the same period. 

Support organizations, including Rape Crisis Scotland, noted that many victims of sexual violence do not report offences to authorities, suggesting that the actual prevalence of sexual crimes may be significantly higher. Authorities attributed part of the increase to greater reporting by survivors, including reports of historical offences, while also expressing concern over the growing incidence of sexual violence, particularly in online environments.

The sharp rise in recorded sexual offences and domestic abuse cases is a matter of significant legal and social concern.
