Suspicious Death of Six-Year-Old Boy in Tamil Nadu Triggers Ritual Killing Allegations

Suspicious Death of Six-Year-Old Boy in Tamil Nadu Triggers Ritual Killing Allegations

Vellore, Tamil Nadu: A six-year-old boy was found dead at his grandmother’s residence in Melpatti village, Vellore district, Tamil Nadu. The child’s body reportedly bore multiple injuries, prompting police to initiate an investigation into the circumstances of his death. The grandmother and paternal aunt were arrested following preliminary inquiries. While some relatives and villagers alleged that the child may have been subjected to a ritual sacrifice linked to occult practices, police stated that the investigation had not yet established evidence supporting the theory of human sacrifice. Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report and forensic findings to determine the exact cause of death and the nature of the injuries.

Legal Significance

The case primarily concerns the alleged unlawful death of a child and may attract provisions relating to homicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). If the investigation establishes intentional killing, Section 103 BNS (Murder) and the corresponding punishment provisions would become applicable. If the death resulted from a deliberate physical assault without the intention required for murder, alternative provisions relating to culpable homicide or voluntarily causing grievous hurt may be considered depending on the evidence.

Since the victim is a minor, the case also raises issues concerning the protection of children from abuse and violence. If the allegations of ritual sacrifice or occult practices are substantiated, investigators may examine whether the offence was committed under the guise of superstition or black magic, which can aggravate the gravity of the offence. The matter underscores the importance of forensic evidence and scientific investigation in distinguishing between speculation and criminal liability.
