Teen Girl Stabbed After Rejecting Marriage Proposal; Accused Arrested 

Kanyakulangara,Thiruvananthapuram: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly stabbed by a 21-year-old man near her residence in Kanyakulangara, Thiruvananthapuram, after she rejected his marriage proposal. According to reports, the accused allegedly waited near the area and confronted the girl when she stepped out to purchase a book. An argument reportedly followed, during which he attacked her with a sharp weapon and fled the scene. The victim sustained serious injuries to her neck and face and was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, for treatment. The accused was subsequently arrested by the Vattappara Police, and further investigation is underway.  

Legal significance 

The incident highlights the criminal consequences of violence arising from rejection, coercive behaviour, and obsession-based targeting of women and girls. If the prosecution establishes that the accused attacked the victim with the intention of causing her death, the offence may attract Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Attempt to Murder). 

Since the victim is a minor, the case assumes greater seriousness from a child-protection perspective. Depending on the evidence collected, provisions relating to voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons (Section 117 BNS, 2023) may also be examined. The case underscores that rejection of a proposal or relationship does not provide any justification for violence and that the law treats such acts as serious offences against personal liberty, bodily integrity, and safety.
