Thrissur Murder Exposes Alleged Sex Racket; Police Intensify Investigation

Thrissur: A murder investigation in Thrissur led police to uncover an alleged prostitution racket operating from a rented house in the city. According to preliminary findings, the premises had reportedly been functioning as an illicit centre for several months and was primarily frequented by migrant workers from other states.  

The case arose after an Odisha native, identified as Dhanpati Naik, sustained severe injuries during an alleged assault at the rented house following a dispute reportedly connected to money. He was admitted to a hospital with serious head injuries and later succumbed to those injuries while undergoing treatment. Police subsequently initiated a detailed investigation into both the homicide and the alleged illegal activities conducted at the premises.  

Several persons allegedly associated with the operation of the house have been taken into custody, and investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the assault, the death, and the suspected prostitution network. The incident has raised concerns about clandestine criminal activities operating within densely populated urban residential areas. 

Legal significance 

The incident may attract serious penal consequences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) in relation to the death of the victim. Depending on the outcome of the investigation and the evidence regarding intention and participation, offences such as murder (Section 103 BNS), unlawful assembly (Section 190 BNS), rioting (Section 191 BNS), and acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention (Section 3(5) BNS) may be invoked against the accused persons. These provisions are significant in determining individual and collective criminal liability for the fatal assault. 

The case also raises issues relating to the alleged operation of a prostitution racket, attracting provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 (ITPA). Relevant provisions include Section 3 (keeping or managing a brothel), Section 4 (living on the earnings of prostitution), Section 5 (procuring, inducing, or taking a person for prostitution), and Section 7 (prostitution in or near public places). The matter highlights the intersection of violent crime and organized immoral trafficking activities, requiring investigation under both the BNS and the ITPA.
