United Kingdom (Bury): Grooming Gang Victim’s Historic Convictions Quashed

United Kingdom (Bury): Grooming Gang Victim’s Historic Convictions Quashed

United Kingdom: The Crown Court formally quashed the historic criminal convictions of a woman who was groomed and sexually exploited at age 14 by a grooming gang in 2002. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) referred her case after finding that authorities failed to protect her from emotional blackmail and coercion, wrongfully prosecuting her instead of treating her as a victim of sexual exploitation.

Action to be Taken:

Identify and review similar historical cases where child sexual exploitation (CSE) victims were wrongfully prosecuted rather than protected, establish streamlined pathways through the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) to quash improper convictions, enforce multi-agency safeguarding protocols across police, local authorities, and care homes, support the national statutory independent inquiry into grooming gang institutional failures, and provide comprehensive legal, psychological, and restorative support to survivors.
